How to Replace a Water Pump

When changing your vehicle’s water pump, as with any maintenance or repair, your safety is very important. Before starting, make sure that your engine is cool, the ignition is off, and you have removed the negative cable from the battery. Be sure to consult your repair manual for possible, car-specific needs. Once you are confident that you understand the process, you can begin.

The first step in changing your water pump is removing your old one. You are going to start by draining the coolant from the radiator or engine block into a clean drip pan. Put this off to the side where it will not be spilled. Next, you must to remove the fan and the fan clutch. Check them for any bends or cracks and replace if necessary. Depending on your vehicle, there may be other components that prohibit you from accessing the water pump. In most instances, you do not need to completely remove these components. Once they are moved out of your way, begin detaching all the hoses and fittings that thread into the pump. After removing the bolts, clean the treads out and swipe off the engine’s mounting surface.

Now your new pump can be installed. Begin by coating both sides of the gasket lightly with sealer and then position it on the engine. Coat the threads of any bolts that screw into a coolant passage. You can then attach the new pump. Hand-tighten the bolts first and spin the pump shaft to ensure that it operates freely. If it moves correctly, tighten the mounting bolts. Continue to replace all components that were removed and check all hoses for tightness. Close the radiator drain, add coolant, and then reconnect the negative battery cable.
